Kao USA has voluntarily recalled three lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo in 8.5 oz and 33.8 oz bottles after the detection of Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria, per a recall notice the U.S. Food and Drug Administration published on July 1, 2026. Affected bottles were made between February 21 and February 26, 2026, and sold in the U.S. and Canada.

Which Oribe shampoo lots are affected?

The recall covers lot YR010556 of the 8.5 oz bottle (UPC 840035231242) and lots YR010566 and YR010576 of the 33.8 oz bottle (UPC 840035231273), per the FDA notice. Lot codes are printed in black on the bottom of each bottle and all affected codes begin with the letters YR. As WDSU reported on July 7, 2026, the recall applies to products "in the U.S. and Canada," so salon shelves and home showers both warrant a check. Readers who bought the shampoo recently can simply flip the bottle and compare the code against the three published lots. Salon-size bottles deserve the same check, since the 33.8 oz format is a backbar staple and two of the three lots cover it. Per Good Housekeeping's report, the manufacturing window of February 21 to 26, 2026, means most affected units reached shelves this spring, so recent purchases are the first place to look.

What is Pluralibacter gergoviae?

It is a bacterium associated in the medical literature with opportunistic infections, and it is a known spoiler of cosmetic formulations because it can resist common preservative systems. The FDA notice states that "Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria pose little medical risk to healthy people," while noting that "those with certain health issues such as weakened immune systems may be more susceptible to infection." Good Housekeeping reported on July 10, 2026, that the bacterium "is linked to respiratory diseases, urinary tract infections, eye infections, and even sepsis" in clinical contexts, which is why contamination findings trigger recalls even when everyday risk stays low. No adverse-reaction reports tied to these lots have been published by the FDA.

What should readers who own this shampoo do?

Stop using it, whatever their health status. The company states that "regardless of health status, Kao USA is urging anyone who has affected products as specified below to discontinue use," per the FDA recall notice. Consumers can call the Kao Professional Hair Technical Hotline at 800-333-2442 or email oribecomplaints@kao.com to report an issue or request a replacement, and retail and salon partners have been asked to pull the lots from sale. For everyone else, the episode is a useful nudge: lot codes exist for exactly this moment, and checking one takes ten seconds, as coverage of the recall and Good Housekeeping's report both walk through.
